How to Build Credit From Zero in 2026

No credit history? No problem. About 26 million Americans are credit invisible according to the CFPB. Here's exactly how to go from 0 to 700 — without an SSN myth, predatory loans, or paying interest you don't need.

Why Having “0” Credit Is Completely Normal in the US

If you just turned 18, moved to the US, or have always paid cash, you are part of the 26 million Americans the CFPB calls “credit invisible” — plus another 19 million with files too thin to score. It doesn't mean you're bad with money. It just means no bank has reported your behavior to the three bureaus yet.

The US system doesn't start you at 0 and move you up. It starts you with no file at Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Your first goal isn't to get a perfect score — it's to become scorable. That typically takes one account reporting for 1-3 months.

  • You need at least 1 account open 6 months and 1 reported in last 6 months to generate a FICO Score — per FICO's own minimum criteria (CFPB).
  • Most lenders pull FICO, not VantageScore. VantageScore can generate faster but FICO is what matters for 90% of US lending decisions (Experian).
  • No SSN? You can still build with ITIN or secured cards that report without SSN. Chime Credit Builder does not require credit check and reports to all 3 bureaus.

The 5 FICO Factors You Must Understand (Weight Matters)

Every move you make should map to these. This is how Equifax and Experian explain FICO Score 8, the most used in the US:

FACTORWEIGHT
Payment History — Did you pay on time?35%
Amounts Owed / Utilization — How much of limit used?30%
Length of History — Age of oldest + average15%
Credit Mix — Revolving + installment10%
New Credit — Inquiries + new accounts10%

When you start at zero, you have no payment history and no mix. That's why the best starter strategy is one revolving account (secured or Chime) + one small installment (Self). That covers 4 of 5 factors from day one.

5 Proven Steps: Zero to Scorable to 700

Step 1: Open a reporting account that can't hurt you

  • Chime Credit Builder Visa® Secured Credit Card: No credit check, no annual fee, no interest. You move money from Chime Checking to secure your limit, spend, and Chime auto-pays. Reports to Experian, Equifax, TransUnion as revolving. Ideal first card in the US because it prevents high utilization — you set limit yourself (Source: Chime, Experian).
  • Alternative if no bank account: Secured cards like Discover it® Secured or Capital One Platinum Secured — require $200 deposit refundable later. Also report to 3 bureaus.

Step 2: Add an installment builder

  • Self Credit Builder Loan: You make payments to a CD that you get at end. Self reports to all 3 bureaus as installment loan. $25/mo for 24 months = $520 savings + 24 on-time marks. No hard inquiry. Requires SSN or ITIN (Source: Self, CFPB method for credit-builder loans).
  • Why it matters: FICO gives +20-40 points for having credit mix. One card + one loan is the fastest legal way to “mix” when starting from zero (Equifax).

Step 3: Automate to perfection for 6 months

  • Set autopay for at least the minimum. One 30-day late can drop a new score 60-110 points (Experian data).
  • Keep utilization under 10%. With Chime, your reported limit = money moved. Keep balance low; Chime reports $0 or small amount.
  • Do not apply for 3 cards at once. Each inquiry stays 2 years.

Step 4: Grow your file with Experian Boost (optional) + rent reporting

  • Experian Boost can add on-time utilities, Netflix, rent (via Boom, RentReporters) to Experian only. Helps if you're thin but not for FICO 8 at all bureaus.
  • Only add if rent already on-time and landlord reports.

Step 5: graduate and audit

  • At month 7+, check free Experian file via annualcreditreport.com. Dispute errors same day — CFPB says 1 in 5 have errors.
  • Ask secured card issuer to graduate to unsecured and refund deposit. Then consider entry unsecured card.

How Self and Chime Actually Create History

Chime (revolving): Unlike traditional secured cards, Chime doesn't check credit and doesn't charge interest. You decide your secured limit by transferring from Chime Spending Account. Each purchase reduces secured amount; Chime uses Secured Account balance to pay by due date. Reports as “paid as agreed” — that's 35% of FICO. Because you set limit, you avoid accidental 80% utilization trap.

Self (installment): Self holds your loan proceeds in a locked CD at partner banks (Lead Bank, Sunrise). You pay monthly; each payment reported as installment loan payment. At end, you get savings minus fees + interest. This creates installment history (mix) and shows ability to handle fixed payments — key for auto/mortgage underwriting in US.

Together: Month 1 = 2 accounts on file. Month 6 = 12 payment events. Month 12 = 24 events. That's enough for many lenders to approve first apartment/used car in the US market.

Realistic Timeline: From 0 to 700 in the US

Month 0-1Open Chime + Self. No score yet — file building. Average US beginner opens 1.7 accounts.
Month 1-3VantageScore appears (~600-650). FICO still “n/a” until 6 months per FICO minimum scoring criteria (CFPB).
Month 6First FICO Score generated — typically 620-680 if 100% on-time, utilization <10% (Experian study of credit builders).
Month 12660-700+ achievable with 2 accounts, no lates, mix present. Equifax says 12 months on-time is threshold for “good”.
Month 18-24700-740+ if you keep utilization low and avoid new inquiries. Self CD matures — you get savings.

7 Mistakes That Keep Americans at 0

  • 1. Paying Credit Repair companies upfront: Illegal per CFPB — no company can charge before work done. CROA prohibits it.
  • 2. Becoming an authorized user of a maxed-out card: Their 90% utilization becomes yours. Only join someone with <10% utilization and 5+ years history.
  • 3. No credit check loan stores: Payday/title loans in many states do NOT report on-time (only collections). They don't build credit.
  • 4. Closing first card at month 12: Kills average age and limit. Keep it — no annual fee cards can stay open forever.
  • 5. Using >30% of limit because “it shows usage”: Myth. FICO has no memory for high utilization bonus. Low wins.
  • 6. Ignoring all 3 bureaus: Chime reports to 3, Self reports to 3. Some cheap cards report to 1 only — avoid them.
  • 7. Applying for premium rewards too early: Denial = hard inquiry with no account. Use pre-approval checkers without impact.

Frequently Asked Questions: Building Credit From Zero (US)

Can I build credit with no SSN?

Yes for revolving: Chime Credit Builder requires SSN but some secured cards accept ITIN. Rent reporters like Boom accept ITIN. For official SSN-free building, you need ITIN + bank that reports. Self requires SSN/ITIN.

What credit score do you start with? Is 0 real?

No US bureau gives you 0. You start with no file. After first account reports for 1 month, VantageScore can be ~630-670. FICO requires 6 months (CFPB). So “0 to 700” is marketing shorthand for “invisible to good.”

Does Self charge interest?

Self accounts include admin fee and interest at ~15.92% APR on small build plans, but you get money back minus fees at end. Check latest at Self.inc. The fee is the cost of installment reporting — still cheaper than secured card interest if you carry balance.

How fast can I get to 700?

With 100% on-time payments, <10% utilization, and 2-account mix, median US user hits 670-700 by month 12 per Experian analysis of credit-builder users. No lates, no inquiries=faster.

Which accounts report to all 3 bureaus?

Both Chime Credit Builder and Self Credit Builder report to Experian, Equifax, TransUnion. Always confirm “reports to all 3” before opening — required by our ScoreUp methodology.

Do I need to carry a balance to build?

No. FICO does not reward interest. Pay full statement balance. Carrying balance only adds APR fees — cited by Equifax and CFPB as myth.
